First Reading: Ezekiel 37:12-14 “I will put my spirit in you that you may live” Psalm 130 “With the Lord there is mercy and fullness of redemption” Second Reading: Romans 8:8-11 “The Spirit of the One who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you.” Gospel: John 11:1-45 “I am the resurrection and the life” Next weekend is Palm Sunday, although it doesn’t feel it. The cancellation of public Masses for the health and well-being of our parishioners has interrupted our Lenten rhythm. Things just seem to be out of sync. I at least, (hopefully you too), feel a sense of emptiness. My limiting of social contact with family, friends, staff, and parishioners is at best –awkward! I don’t wish to get sick; nor do I wish to be a contributing factor in someone else contracting Coronavirus. Before we embark next weekend upon Holy Week and attempt to pray through the Paschal Mysteries in the best of ways, let’s place this last Sunday of Lent into proper perspective. The Coronavirus has us all scared – emotionally and physically. We don’t wish to come down with it. We don’t want to come in contact with someone who has it. The effects of the Coronavirus is affecting our livelihoods, financial abilities, and our mental health. It is also doing us spiritual harm because perhaps we might find it difficult to pray and certainly having no Mass is disruptive to our routine Catholic lives. I would like to take this a step further and compare the Coronavirus to SIN! Sin can scare us emotionally, physically, and spiritually. Sin can become a barrier for us to have a relationship with a loved one.
These examples put a wall up – we are hurt, angry, betrayed, ashamed! We have lost the persons we love! “I trusted him or her or them!” We don’t wish to become like them! My Mom drilled in my sister and brother and me – “show me your friends and I’ll tell you what kind of a person you’ll become.” If I hang around with a person with a foul mouth; sooner or later I will curse like him. If I want to be with the cool crowd and want to be accepted, I might need to smoke, drink, or do drugs. All these examples can be sinful! Often we give in to sin because we believe everyone else is doing the same thing. Lastly the devil, the Prince of Lies, desires us to believe that he does not exist, or is as powerful as God, or there really is no such thing as a sinful act. Sin is more spiritually life-threatening than the Coronavirus. Sin destroys our souls – our relationship with God, our families and friends, our sense of brotherly love, and lastly our own self esteem. Sin isolates, distances, contaminates, makes us unredeemable, or far worse callous where we no longer care or feel! On March 24, I read a Wall Street Journal article entitled “The West is misinterpreting Wuhan’s Coronavirus progress – and drawing the wrong lessons” by Jeremy Page. To summarize Mr. Page, the western world to slow the pandemic and to reduce the strain on the health care systems calls for social distancing, self- isolation, and quarantine; but this does not eradicate the virus! We need to be able to test, treat, and develop a vaccine. Our vaccination against Sin began at Baptism where a spirit was instilled inside us to crave the love of God. A booster shot was given at Confirmation where the Spirit of God who raised Jesus from the dead dwells within us. The Sacrament of Holy Matrimony and Holy Orders raise our social conscience to help our loved ones get to heaven. And all of these Sacraments become sanctifying with our reception of the Precious Body and Blood of Jesus which raises us to eternal life and Reconciliation which tests us, treats us, and vaccinates us from the occasions of sin. I pray none of us in the next few weeks contracts or carries the Coronavirus BUT sadly I do know we will be all tempted to commit sin. Are we taking the proper precautions? |
